Apple Dumplings Recipe
Ingredients
  • 1 double pie crust
  • 6 apples sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Syrup(recipe follows)

Directions

  1. Prepare pie crust as for a 2-crust pie.
  2. Roll dough to 1/8" Thickness, and cut into 6-8"Squares.
  1. Wash apples.
  2. Cut slice off top (so there is a "Flat" Side) and core.
  3. Place an apple in middle of each pastry square, cut side down.
  4. Fill apple cavity with dry sugar (I mix white and brown sugars), dust with cinnamon.
  5. Wet pastry edges, fold up over apple overlapping corners.
  6. Place in buttered baking pan, w/pastry seams down.
  7. Chill for at least 1 hour.

Prepare syrup:

  • 1 c. Sugar
  • 4 T. Butter
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 2. C. Apple juice
  • 1/4 c. Red hots
  1. Combine and boil 3 minutes.
  1. Pour 1/2 syrup over chilled dumplings.
  2. Bake at 450°F for 5 minutes, reduce heat to 350°F and bake for 40 min.
  3. Until lightly browned.
  4. Serve warm with remaining (hot) syrup and whipped cream.

Comments
I serve these for Thanksgiving instead of Apple pies. I make them the day before, refrigerate overnight and have them baking while everyone is eating dinner.
